Once you hear about dragon boat racing and become involved in this world of\u00a0sport, community and fun, there is no turning back. There is much more to it than\u00a0a great day on the water. There are different and interesting ways to experience\u00a0the sport for both team members and spectators. Whether you\u2019ve never paddled\u00a0in a festival, or you paddle regularly in a dragon boat, you feel connected to it.\u00a0That\u2019s the beauty of it \u2013 from the moment you pick up a paddle, you\u2019ll love\u00a0dragon boat racing!<\/p>\n

Traditional Hong Kong style dragon boats are 46-feet long, with 10 seats and 20\u00a0paddlers. A drum seat in front of the first two paddlers (seated beside each other)\u00a0holds a drummer \u2013 you want the smallest, loudest, most rhythmic person you can\u00a0find. A steerer guides the boat with the steering oar in back. These 22 people\u00a0make up a dragon boat team. The stroke is unlike any other (the most similar is\u00a0outrigger canoe) and taught in practice. All ages, skill levels and physiques\u00a0perfect their stroke and timing for the ultimate teamwork experience!<\/p>\n

Every paddler plays a specific role. They sit next to each other, and against the\u00a0gunnel to balance the boat as they paddle. The strokers occupy the front three\u00a0seats of the boat, while the fourth seat is a transition place where, ideally, the\u00a0paddlers have rhythm and power. Then, seats four, five, and six consist of the\u00a0\u201cengine room,\u201d where the largest and strongest team members sit. The last four\u00a0rows of a dragon boat are filled with strong paddlers who are also typically\u00a0shorter and able to paddle faster. Paddlers at this location in the dragon boat are\u00a0considered \u201crockets,\u201d because the water is moving faster to them, from the first\u00a014 seats since they\u2019re scooping water back. The paddlers are taught to watch up\u00a0the middle of the boat and two seats across \u2013 when that paddler has his or her\u00a0paddle up in the air, ready to engage the water, it\u2019s the cue for the person\u00a0watching to get his or her paddle up, as well. While the drummer plays keeps the\u00a0rhythm for most of the boat, it can be difficult to hear on race day. It\u2019s also a very\u00a0visual sport, and if everyone is watching the right person, magic absolutely can\u00a0happen in a dragon boat. Teams have to follow the strategy, and then execute:\u00a0the team members in the front must paddle in perfect timing as an example for\u00a0the back half of the boat. When the power from the middle is mixed with the\u00a0speed and capabilities of the athletes in the back, a dragon boat can glide quickly\u00a0through the water like a bullet.<\/p>\n
